The Adventure Begins

I have begun the process of developing ideas for my student's music shows. The qualification asks my students to put on a 'gig' and they get marked on how well they do this, from the organisation, the promotion to the performance.

I am doing a piece with my first years in February and a major piece with my second years in the summer. I hope to be able to pass on various information and materials to my students though this blog and I hope to open up the creative process to the public here (and I hope it will be of interest to some)

One thing my students have decided is that they don't want to just do a gig. They want to create something more, with a theme, story and meaning. These shows will be gigs but they will be much more. I think this process is very interesting for music students that will be hopefully working in music in the next 10-20 years as new ways of presenting music will be very important in the future.
We hope to create a music show that doesn't rely on celebrity or hits to sell itself. Something that people will want to come and see because of it's theme and the feelings it instills.
After 2 weeks we have come up with ideas for each piece.
Both are critiques of our current situation.

I have put together an overview of each piece and my students can download them here.
Anyone else that is interested can have a read too and if you find the themes interesting please keep watching as there will be a lot more to come as time passes.

The 1st Year Piece Overview (click on link to download):

This piece will be a grotesque cabaret set in the future but referring back nostalgically to our present time.

The 2nd Year Piece Overview(click on link to download):

Zombies have taken over the world and man plays a strange computer game as the world comes down around him.

These downloads will cease working on Monday 30th November.

(btw Both titles are song names. The first person to answer the names of the artists behind each title without using google will get free tickets to each show)

I will be doing a short piece on the history of rhythm in rock music and Gary will talking about music in the 21st century. Gary is an ex music producer who currently writes and lectures on various philosophical topics. He was also involved in the production of my Mighty Bash Dvd and he appears at the end of the film.

I recently helped to create the music for a short film by Gary and here it is...
